I was told a picture is worth a thousand words. So I have decided to post pictures of my work on this blog.

Here we have a simple marmoleum kitchen laid in the neutral yet vibrant Arabian Pearl. This floor has a slight marbling and soft hues. Arabian Pearl #3861 has a radiant feeling of warmth. It works well with the entry through the front door as one passes through the warm apple colored walls of the family room into the open floor plan of the kitchen.

The pear was a good treat after finishing this beautiful kitchen.

Marmoleum, the natural sustainable floor covering of Forbo Flooring, received the official Cradle-to-Cradle silver certificate. With this certificate, Forbo Marmoleum, produced for over 100 years, receives official confirmation in the contemporary world of C2C.

Marmoleum has been rewarded with many international environmental recognitions like the Nordic Swan, Blaue Engel, Nature Plus to mention a few. According to a LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) study of the University of Leiden (Netherlands), Marmoleum is the most sustainable resilient floor covering in the world. I am fascinated with installing marmoleum. I have been working on many residential kitchens, baths, utility room jobs in Seattle over the years and I have noticed something that may intrigue some homeowners about these types of projects.
Marmoleum installation is extremely non invasive to your home...whether it be new construction or remodeling the process is very clean when compared to other floor coverings. Cutting is done with a hook blade and utility knife, no need for saws or tools that will disperse major amounts of dust and waste. After it is installed it can be walked on immediately, no waiting for grout or sealer to dry, marmo already comes from the factory sealed.

Plywood Underlayerments for Marmoleum

I would consider myself somewhat experienced when it comes to installing Marmoleum in residential projects. In bathrooms, kitchens, utility, and more so recently in living and family areas...which I find splendid and elegant.
Not to rant on, but I really discourage 1/4 underlayerment from an installation perspective and primarily in wet areas. In 2011 I have seen two major large residential failures of this type of installation.
One was a major dishwasher leak that made the underlayerment curl. I wont say that 1/2in ACX is a guarantee against failure, but maybe the leak could have been stopped before it totally ruined 200sf of Marmoleum.
The other project was from moisture coming from a crawl space. All new homes are built to code and most older homes are updated at some point in time. Building regulations call for these spaces to have poly vapor barriers installed over them correctly.
My best advice is not go any less than 1/2in on underlayerment and if a pesky salesperson try's to talk you into covering up your old floor with 1/4in ply...just say no! Rip all of it out and start from new, it will save you money in the long run!

Underlayerment and Subfloor Preparation for Marmoleum or Linoleum

One of the most common mistakes in that can be made in installing a Marmoleum floor covering is not choosing the right underlayerment and sturdy subfloor.

First the subfloor needs to be secured if working on a remodel. If you are working with ship lap subfloor or something that is over 20 years old adding few extra screws are nails in the floor joists firm up the floor.

Next choosing the proper underlayerment is key. In large areas such as living rooms, family rooms or commercial areas where there is alot of light or long expanses of material. In my personal opinion no less than 1/2 in plywood underlayerment over subfloor will do the trick.

Take for instance this brand new floor installed in West Seattle. The first installation of 1/4 in plywood underlayerment( over existing vinyl and underlayerment) was used and did not turn out so well. The plywood showed alot of the high and low spots and just was not that firm.

The customer was not happy with the install, so the 1/2 in scuff guard plywood underlayerment was used for the second install. This did the trick. The floor was solid, firm, and showed no signs of high or low spots or rolls in the floor.

With the proper care this floor will last many decades of wear and tear. It is sometimes helpful to remember that the finish is not the most important part of the job, its whats underneath that really matters. Take the time to discuss the choices you have with your contractor and when your new floor is in you can rest assured that whats underneath it is going to last as long as whats on top.

I am finding working with reclaimed hardwood a real joy. Its very exciting to be reusing wood that may have been a ranchers barn, a building truss, or large beam from a warehouse.

We really enjoy working with reclaimed hardwoods. These products are green, beautifully grained, and come with a story. Just think, if you purchase one of these products you may be getting flooring today that was milled 50-100 years ago and was in a hotel, retail, or old home.

Damaged Marmoleum or Linoleum

Linoleum is making a comeback. If you have it in your home you are in vogue.

If your floor has signs of damage or wear, gouges or burns, dent from a drop of a utensil or pan. Have no fear. Use these simple steps to repair a dime sized gouge or deep scratch.

Materials needed are.... Linoleum to match (from install leftovers or sample square), blue tape, Elmer's glue, utility knife, spackle knife, 220 grit sandpaper, sponge or brush,marmoleum finish or similar finish.
Here are the steps to fixing it.

Simply find a leftover piece of marmoleum or linoleum. Should have been overage or piece left by your installer for repairs
Tape outline perimeter damaged area with blue painters tape
Cut out damaged area with utility knife
Take your leftover linoleum and with a utility knife blade scratch off the surface of the linoleum to make small shavings and flakes of linoleum
With the shavings of linoleum, mix with Elmer's glue to make a paste
Place paste in damage area with a spackle knife or similar to flatten surface
Let dry overnight
Sand to smooth surface and apply new finish with sponge or brush.

A linoleum installer is trained in repairing these problems and the nature of linoleum is that it can be fixed....hence the term that linoleum has been coined the "the 40 year floor" by the industry.
Refinishing an old floor is as easy as stripping off the old finish and applying new. Holes can be fixed to near perfect and scratches can usually be cleaned and resealed. Just find the right person willing to take the time to explore some of the ways of sprucing up an old linoleum floor.

Linoleum has been coined the "40 year floor" for many good reasons. One reason is that is can be refinished. This is accomplished with a floor buffer, cleaner or floor finish stripper and new finish.
Lightly spray the linoleum with the proper amount of cleaner from a hudson type sprayer, scrub the floors with the buffer and black scrubby pad, squeegee vacuum up the old finish, put a fan on to dry quickly...then apply the finish to the manufacturers specifications and viola you have added another "40 years to your floors"...Wow!

Heat welding marmoleum is a great way spruce up a floor. Heat welding can be used as a tool to accent in a myriad of different ways. Only your imagination is the the limit. Circles, lines, angles, different colors or even CNC machined designs can be accented with a heat welding rod.

Heat welding is the standard specification that architects and designers use to treat seams in heavy traffic areas, hospitals, offices and clinics. Especially in hospitals and clinics where the need to keep germs out of seams is necessary the heat welding of seams has proved to be a good solution to this problem.

The most common problems with an old linoleum floor is the seams. Seams catch dirt, rip, water penetrates loose or poorly installed floors. But have not fear my friend. Linoleum is incredibly repairable. There are a myriad of different ways to resolve the problem.

Don't fret the cigarette burns, gouges, scratches, holes or stains. Most of these can be repaired by a competent flooring guy.

I truly believe that linoleum is one of the best products for your bathroom or kitchen floor. Not only is it very cost effective, it is bulletproof, easily repaired and maintained, the colors are out of this world.

Most installations take only a day or two and can be walked on immediately. It is eco-friendly and most people do not know that it was invented about 160 years ago. It is such a great product that b-boys breakdance on it.

Fall is here. Rain is falling.Floric moisture block is the perfect coating for concrete floors, walls, blocks and everything concrete. If you need to keep water out of your home, building or slab I highly recommend this product.
If you need a moisture vapor barrier for a floorcovering this product can achieve that too. Moisture block will provide 12lbs of hydrostatic pressure protection for all most any flooring product you would like to use.
It can also be used as sealer over and acid stain or dyed floor. My customers have raved about how brings out the color. In my opinion moisture block is great solution for that wet area you may be having problems with and for preventative moisture protection.

Floor transitions,reducers,thresholds at doorways have been a concern of mine after I graduated from college. College went well...but here I am discussing the importance of proper transition placement.
Nothing irks me more when I walk on to a job and notice a transition on the wrong side of the door, not lined up straight and/or the height of the two different materials do not match up.
A perfect transition is one that is the same height, is directly under the swinging part of the door and is lined up square under the door. It is the little details that make or break the final product of the job.

When I asked one of my favorite designers, at Space A Design Collective in Seattle, Emily Lauderback where she shops for some of her products she mentioned Ecohaus. Being in the trade of flooring I did not have a clue as to what store she was talking about. So I decided to check it out.

Here is what I thought. A store that has all the major products to give your home a face lift...with a eco-friendly touch. Tiles, Flooring, Hardware, Cabinents, Countertops the works. Sub floor preparation is key to having long lasting resilient floors in your home. It is almost more important than the material you chose. For existing homes new 1/4 in plywood screwed or stapled down provides a perfect surface for resilient floor coverings. Trowel down Ardex Feather Finish over the seams and staple holes and let the cementitious material dry. Sand down the Ardex to a smooth finish, re coat if necessary. Now you are ready for flooring material.

How Much Does Acid Staining Cost? Residental and Commercial

There is nothing that looks quite like acid staining a floor. It has a marbled mottled look that does not compare to any product made in the marketplace. Each floor is unique in that the water and the acid's metallic salts chemically reacts with concrete's calcium hydroxide leaving behind an insoluble color etched into the floor....permanently.

There are a myriad of colors to chose from and various manufactuors of these stains. Floric Polytech is a great manufacturer and offers a wide variety of colors, sealers, epoxies, and other decorative concrete products.

The price of a basic acid stain in the Seattle metropolitian both commercially and residentially is $3-5 a sq. ft. This cost is much cheaper than most traditional floors like VCT, Ceramic Tile and other resilient floors. Not only in some of the upfront costs of materials but also that of longterm maintenance. If you happen to be on the more creative side of the spectrum and chose to use more colors, need decorative saw cuts, floor preparation (ie hand grinding or diamond grinding) you could be looking at $15 sq. ft.

The typical DIY'er could do it themselves, but it is best left to the professionals. When hiring a contractor be sure to have a look a their jobs either in person or picture. There is an old adage that says," You pay for what you get". Be sure to hire a professional with experience for the best quality of work. The next thing to do would be to show and tell friends, family and neighboors about your new fabulous floors.

This floor is an excellent example of a simple yet very attractive floorcovering.

Todd Herriot chose to give the concrete floors a facelift and we sprayed on grey stain and sealed with two coats of solvent based sealer. Perfect for commercial retail spaces which need high durability,low maintenance and easy cleaning.

Rubber floorcovering was used in the training area. The rubber is very responsive, cushy, and shock absorbant for tough workouts at the training center. Marmoleum Bathroom Floor Renovation

Marmoleum is an excellent product to use in baths.

With naturally inherent anti-bactericidal and anti-static properties, Marmoleum it is a great choice for the bath.

This floor was installed over existing vinyl that was skimcoated with Ardex Feather Finish to fill in imperfections. It was then sanded and ready for the new Marmoleum made at Forbo. The color of the product is lava and the decorative lines in the floor are a natural grey. The lines are accomplish by using a technique called heat welding, which basically melts a rod of glue into a groove then it is planed of to the height of the marmoleum.

Sausman Floorcovering Collaborated with Gold Star Staining to complete Marshill Church in downtown Seattle, Wa. the old brick building that once hosted the infamous Tabella night club.
Approximately 5000sq ft of acid stain with a few different colors. Floor was diamond ground, stained, sealed, and coated with two coats of wax. Turned out beautiful. Come down and have a look. 2333 Western Ave Seattle WA 98121
